E-Sports Finish Third in State

In a display of skill and determination, the St. Anthony High School ESports Mario Kart team made their mark at the IHSA ESports State finals, with a 3rd place finish at Evergreen Park Community High School located southwest of Chicago. The Cyberdogs demonstrated exceptional skill and teamwork throughout a challenging 16-team double elimination bracket.

This achievement holds a special significance as it marks only the 2nd year that ESports has been sanctioned at the IHSA level, making their accomplishment all the more remarkable.

The Mario Kart team consisted of seniors Sam Deters and Gio Bucio, junior Aidan Braunecker, and sophomore Greer Weis.

The St. Anthony Cyberdogs consists of 16 team members who compete in 4 different games throughout the season; Mario Kart, Rocket League, Super Smash Bros. (singles and crew), and FIFA.

The Cyberdogs are coached by Phil Zaccari and Chad Volmert. When asked about E-sports’ recognition by the IHSA, head coach Zaccari stated, “The rise of E-sports is neat to the point where there’s something that everyone can play.”
